Dragon Ball Daima - Episode 5 Review

Episode 5, "Panzy"

Introducing PanzyPanzy and Kaioshin

*****SPOILERS*****

Synopsis: The girl the group meets, whose name is Panzy, says that she knows the way to the castle. On the way, Panzy reveals that she's actually 82 years old. In the First Demon World, Gomah oversees Dende's care, hoping that he can get him to produce new Dragon Balls for him. When Goku and the group get to the castle, it's revealed that Panzy is the princess. The king is reluctant to believe that Goku and his friends on Earth defeated Majin Buu, so he has Goku's strength tested in a battle against his men. Goku easily takes them down. The king gives the group a plane so they can reach the Tamagamis, which promptly breaks down as soon as they take off.

Comments:

We learned quite a lot about Panzy in this episode, didn't we? I mean, it is titled her name, so I guess it makes sense.

Panzy, a princess of the Third Demon World, is able to (barely) use magic, loves tinkering with machines, is a mere 82 years old(!), and doesn't like to pack lite. She leads Goku, Kaioshin, and Gorilo... Goliro... Glorio through the Demon World to her father's castle. She reminds me a little bit of Dragon Ball GT era Pan with her spunk, but without Pan's annoying bratty side. Well, thus far. We also know she can't stand for Gomah's men's treatment of the inhabitants of the Third World and has actually taken up confronting them (with mixed results). So we know that she is fine going headlong into danger. So if Daima is GT done better, we have our Pan.

They just need a friendly robot pal now.

Sometimes I wonder if Goku is intended to have regressed to a child, too, because of the "sticking out his tongue and touching his nose" scene. At first blush, it's funny and cute, but that's something an actual child does, not somebody who's been turned into a child. Sure, even adult Goku is pretty childlike, but that might be going a tad far with characterization. Writers, if you can't imagine adult Goku ever doing a thing, don't write him doing it here in Daima, because he's still an adult.

Well, yeah, like I said, it's still Goku, so "adult" is pushing it, but he's a little more sophisticated than: "Look what I can do with my tongue!"

What is like Goku, child or adult, is his endless search for strong opponents and cheekiness in casual combat. I doubt he really needed to transform into a Super Saiyan to take down those glorified guards (and it's weird that the transformation went unexplained to remind the kiddos at home), but the fight scene was another fun one that shows Goku having the time of his life.

Hybis is a character introduced in this episode, and it looks like this subordinate of the king will be headed for Earth to report the pin code to Goku's usual companions. He seems a little flaky, a bit like a mellower Jaco, but I want to see more of him. I wonder how Vegeta will interact with him.

Time for our episodic look at that suspicious blue majin! It's GLORIO WATCH.

GLORIO WATCH: Glorio seems upset when Panzy knows a shortcut to the castle. He was intending to go there, right? And we find out it was he who approached the Third Demon World's king and offer to take out Gomah. He also never told King Kadan that Goku and Kaioshin had been turned into children. He's up to something, damn it!

I don't trust Glorio.
